Kakailians helping Kakailians-

Eva (Dencie) Rimando Vicaldo, sister and relatives purchasing rice from store in Naguilian...

With the help of relatives, the rice was aliquoted to manageable portions...

To relatives and friends from Naguilian...

Dencie (in black dress) and a relative.

Eva (Dencie), and brother Emmanuel, came all the way from Manila right after typhoon 'Pepeng', inspite of the travel difficulties right after floods, to distribute rice and cash to relatives and kakailians strickened by the floods. A compassionate, caring, and sympathetic Naguilianon, Dencie, who holds a Doctorate of Education from UP, is a sister of Vilma Rimando Ferrer and Arnold (Nonong) Rimando, and married to a cardiologist, Dr. Efren Vicaldo.

Correction from Dencie:
The money came from the Amadeo-Rimando Family, with contributions from brothers and sisters from USA: Velma Ferrer, Nonong Rimando, Imelda Rimando, Eugene and Marlene, and from the Philippines: Bebot, Emmanuel, and Dencie. Brod Emmanuel is the chief nurse at the Philex Mines Hospital in Benguet, Mt. Province.
Thank You-Amadeo-Rimando Family.

NEWS FLASH!! DEATHS DUE TO FLOODS IN NAGUILIAN.....

I received an email from Naguilian that Natividad (and 20 other barangays) were under water and that some Kakailians have lost their lives as a result of being trapped in their houses and eventually drowned due to fast rising water, submerging houses completely. To give you an idea how high did the water level reached, near the Church. As of this writing we do not know how many people have died or missing. Patients from Naguilian Hospital were transferred to the Presidentia and to the Mormon church because water level reached their grounds waist deep. It meant that a lot of houses were affected and masses of people were displaced.

Right now we can not do anything physically, but PRAY for our KAKAILIANS in Naguilian.

Several chapters were mobilizing their constituents to gather or collect donations especially money to buy rice, food and basic necessities. Our town was devastated and your help is needed now. Please contact any of our townmates.

My cellphone: 510-363-2510 Ed.

Questions that come to mind...

Does the town have any emergency alert system? Any rescue teams? Any motor boats? Food bank? Disaster Plan?

Will keep you updated as we receive the latest from this 100-year Flood of Naguilian...

Naguilian Hospital After the Floods-

From this picture, you can see the mark on the wall where the water level have reached.

These pictures tell us that it would take a long time to make this facility usable again. Majority of there equipments were under water and may have become non-functional and contaminated.  Because the flood happened during the night, equipments from all departments, such as surgery, ER, lab, x-ray, kitchen, and pharmacy, were engulfed by water in a very short time, while personnel may have been busy transporting patients under heavy rain . A good possibility these equipments may become unusable. The whole hospital has to be washed down and decontaminated. Because the walls and mattresses were submerged, a possibility of molds, a potential health hazard, may appear, causing more problems to the citizens. This alone is a major disaster!

Bato- Rudy Benitez's rice fields.

Looking at these pictures after 'Pepeng' tells us there were damages but not totally. Assuming that following typhoons, if there are any more this year, will not be as devastating, rice harvest this season will not be a total loss. Since majority of Naguilian is agricultural, it would be interesting to see, after harvest, how much did typhoon 'Pepeng' impacted Naguilian.

If there is a time that Naguilian needed help, NOW is the time! They will need help in all aspects of life. Housing will be a major thing for a lot of people. they will need rebuilding of homes. Food will become scars and shortages may occur, in a short term, due to roads and bridges may not be repaired for a long time. In medium term, products from the farm may not be available because plants/veggies were destroyed by the floods, and it would take a few months for the next crop of veggies to become available, if and only if, the fields are plantable and not inundated by new soil and/or mud rendering the farms unsuitable for planting. There drinking water supply will be another major problem. After the heavy rains, water supply tend to be murky causing the water to be contaminated and may cause water-borne diseases, like Leptospirosis, (maybe) hepatitis, E-coli, and some parasitic diseases. Raw sewage have floated along, and now they have to contend to perished animals which maybe rotting, decomposing, and now covered by flies, which can cause major health problems. MAJOR HEALTH ISSUES MAY BECOME THE NEXT PROBLEM.

Please keep in tune. We will continue to monitor the situation on the days and months ahead. We will continue to communicate with Mayor Abe and Denia.

In Natividad-

The amount of work and clean-up is astronomical and you do not even know where to start. Everything is muddy and contaminated. Piles and piles of unusable personal effects accummulate and maybe left to rot in front of their houses. Garbage collection will be another big issue. Is there a garbage dumps in Naguilian?
