OUTSTANDING NAGUILIANDER-
Dr. Fiorello B. Abenes, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benito Abenes of Naguilian, La Union, has high hopes to win the prestigious award on the Research Category of a project he led in consortium with scientists and engineers of Don Mariano Marcos University of Ilocos Norte, Philippines. The Award Ceremony is being held on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at the National Symposium on Agricultural Resources, Research and Development at the University of the Philippines, Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines The Research team is presenting "Hydrous Bio-Ethanol1: Production, Characterization and Testing." He said, "Our research has the potential of saving the country (Philippines) Php 6 billion per year just by allowing the use of hydrous ethanol in gasohol blends. Removing the 5% water in bioethanol adds 30% more to the cost."
As a former Naguilian elementary and highschool classmate of Fiorello (we fondly call him Leo and/or Boy), we are very proud of his many achievements in service to humanity. He studied Animal Sciences at the University of the Philippines and Central Luzon State University in the Philippines before he moved to United States to complete his Masters and Doctorate Degrees of Reproductive Physiology at University of Connecticut. He was a college professor at the Department of Animal Sciences, California State University -Pomona for more than 30 years while maintaining his license to practice as a Registered Financial abd Stock Broker. An over-achiever, he won many awards including Fullbright Scholarship to complete research projects in the Philippines. He is married to Luningning Muerong of Nueva Ecija, father of two and also a grandfather. He is a brother of equally successful and professional siblings who have helped tremendously in the success of "AnnaktiNaguilian" medical missions.
We congratulate Leo as one of the finest not only in Naguilian, in Nueva Ecija, in Ilocos Norte, in the Philippines but also in the entire world. I would like "AnnaktiNaguilian" submit to Naguilianders Alliance Network a recommendation for him to be a NOBEL PRIZE WINNER! It's about time for a Filipino-American to achieve this international award.

We would like to congratulate the winners of this election. We can now release the tension inside all of us, it could have been worst. We can now reflect on what happened and if there were lessons to be learned. We have survived T. Peping, and now survived the election. We can, once again, refocus our efforts on the business of running our town of Naguilian and refocus on the "wellness" of its Citizens. AGBIAG TI NAGUILIAN!!!
"Ask not what Naguilian can do for you, ask what you can do for Naguilian..." is always an appropriate praise looking in from the outside. Please join us to spread this praise. We care what happened, what is happening, and what will happen, in Naguilian.

ANNAK DECIDED ON ANOTHER MISSION-

Front: L-R. Perla Bautista, Auntie Francing Cacdac, Mila Viernes, Cora Pilapil, & Wevy Aragon
Back: Ed Vita, Roger Bautista, Albert Pilapil, & Ador Aragon.
Annak members held an impromptu meeting on 11/3/09 at the residence of Perla & Roger Bautista in Sunnyvale, CA to discuss the medical/dental situation in Naguilian. Because of the dreadful and difficult situation in the Philippines nowadays, it was overwhelming decided that we will have another Medical/Dental Mission in Naguilian. If there is ever a need for Medical/Dental Mission, now is that time! This is the time we can not say no. The mission will be held at the same place, Civic Center in Naguilian on February 2-5, 2010.
We will be appealing again for your help on this one. Our goal is to raise $5000.00. Our town will not have enough resources to help on this cause because of the resent floods, landslides and major repairs of bridges and infrastructures. The municipality has there hands full. So...
This one is on us. Just like last February 2009, purchase of medicines will be our biggest cost. See webpages on Medical/Dental Mission for expenses on the last mission. Please help us deliver this much needed Medical help to our kakailians. We are planning a 4-day mission, with emphasis on Medical rather than dental, because of the acute nature of the whole situation-people dying, etc. We should have enough antibiotics to fight Leptospirosis and Respiratory diseases, as these (maybe) the main medical problems in Naguilian today. Please send your donations to Delia Vita. Thank you so very much. You will be hearing from me again.

APPEAL FROM SANGGUNIAN OF NAGUILIAN- 10/21/09
This was an email from Hulgar Redentor Rimando, Secretary to the Sanggunian of Naguilian, to Paul Nonog. Paul subsequently forwarded to everyone in his email list. It was intended for all Kakalians overseas.
dear manong paul,
this is Hulgar Redentor Rimando, the Secretary to the Sanggunian of Naguilian. I was tasked by Vice-Mayor Bobot Flores to communicate with our kailians overseas through the net for possible fund raising to help our kailians who were devastated by the recent flood. Just to give you a view of the extent of damages, the approach (about 35 meteres long) of the new mamat-ing bridge was washed out thus isolating the barangay from the mainstream of the community. it is no longer passable through any means of land transport. Huge landslides and road cuts were strewn along the Naguilian-Bagulin Road. Mamat-inng and Tuddingan portion totally isolating Barangay Bimmotobot and the town of Bagulin. Restoration/Rehabilitation works may reach 3 weeks to 1 month. The Hanging Bridge at Aguioas was also washed out and there was a wide portion of the road that was eroded. Aguioas was hardest hit in terms of displaced families. Fallen trees have to be sewn by residents to be used by reconstructing their homes. At Barangay Natividad until this time a lot of families are still digging up through thick mud that went through inside their houses. The scenario is the same at Barangays Dal-lipaoen and Cabaritan where mudflows were severe.
Relief goods are pouring in from various government and non-government organizations. We also conducted meetings with local businessmen and other sectors to give their share of assistance to the flood victims. To manage and facilitate our relief assistance operations, the Municipal Government has formed a committee tasked to solicit and receive donations from all sectors to raise funds for the flood victims. The Committee is headed by Mrs. Helen Obispo, our Municipal Budget Officer. So far we have already received from Naguilian Circle of America Sacramento Chapter their donation amounting to $1200, Erna Bambao donated P5,000.00, Carmencita Jose doled out $500.00 and Dinah Tumapang shared $5,000.00. All of these donations were duly acknowledged with a receipt by the Committee. We are reaching out to other benevolent kailians all over the world to raise more funds. We have to do this since the funds of the Municipal Governmment are just too limited for us to use in rellief assistance operations. Naguilian was hardest hit among the towns in La Union in terms of casualties and damages to crops and infrastructures.
This is the time that Naguilianons should stand side by side, hand in hand to overcome this worst crisis that ever happened to our town. we have to help our displaced less fortunate townmates in rebuilding their homes.
We are counting so much on your support for our townmates to be able to move on. A little assistance from you, our kailians there, will surely mean a lot.
Please pass this on.
Thank you very much and regards.
Hulgar Rimando

MEET JULIUS GACETA

Julius is an architect working for Al-hokiar Group in the Middle East. He is a pure Naguiliander from Baraoas Sur, grew up and attended Primary and High School in Naguilian. His parents, Teotimo Gaceta (deceased, from Mamat-ing) and Socorro Mallare Gaceta (a retired school teacher, originally from Al-alinao), (were) are oldtime Naguilianders. He knows a lot of people, government employees, and former teachers whose pictures were in our webpages. He was excited to see our website, because at his work, he is the only Filipino, and from time to time, feels homesick. This website will certainly keep him informed what's going on with fellow Naguilianons in Naguilian and around the world.
He is married to Alona Lomboy Aviles of Cabaritan Norte, and with a new bambina...Julienne.

Please help me welcome Julius (and family). He can be reached at: juliusgaceta@yahoo.com

DEMAR RILLERA
The following pictures taken during his wedding last April 16th, 2009, in Baraoas Sur, Naguilian, La Union. Welcome to "Annak Ti Naguilian", Demar.

Rillera-Vasay Nuptial-
Let it be known that- Demar Tangalin Rillera will tie the knot with Realyn Vasay on April 16th, 2009 at 10:00 AM at the Naguilian Parish Church of Hippo. Demar is one of two sons of Rodolfo "Abe" Rillera and Delia "Mary" Tangalin Rillera of Baraoas Sur, Naguilian, La Union. Reception will follow at the residence of the Rilleras in Baraoas Sur. Demar holds a Degree in Information Technology from AMA College of Computer Science in San Fernando, La Union. The Vasay family comes from Barangay Nagsidorisan, and Demar fell in love with their lovely daughter-REALYN. As an Information Specialist and while at work in Ortigas, Pasig City, Demar was surfing the internet one day, and found "annaktinaguilian.com" through google. After seeing our webpages, he sent us an email congratulating us of the website, through the website's "Contact Us". Among Demar's expertise is to design websites. He designed a Naguilian Website that someday will be offered to Naguilian. To view, please open this link-( http://naguilianlaunion.100webspace.net/ ) and let us know what you think. Aside from his personal webpages, he also designed their meat business website, and a "Rillera" Website.
The Rilleras own a family business called BEMER'S MEAT STALL in Naguilian Market. They raised hogs (piggery in Baraoas Sur) and retailed pork meats and pork meat products like Longaniza at the market. They have been in this business for over 20 years. This is an example of a successful business in Naguilian, that we would like to highlight in our Prosperity Mission. (Please see "About Naguilian" link).
Demar and Realyn, congratulations on your upcoming wedding bows, and Thank You for sharing your story with "Annak Ti Naguilian". For more information about the wedding or Bemer's Meats, please contact: demz060@yahoo.com.

GENEROUS DONOR DONATED $1000 FOR THE MEDICAL/DENTAL MISSION-
Mr. Bassam Shlewet, the owner of TTT Moneycorp, Ltd. of London, UK, donated $1000.00 for the novel cause of Medical/Dental Mission in Naguilian, La Union, Philippines. This was a pure courage of their Deputy Operations Manager, Josie Nonog, to ask the owner if there are any "spare funds" for charitable donation, and there was, a thousand dollars! Thank you, Mr. Shlewet. Thank you, Josie, for working in behalf of our Kakailians.
As of this writing, the total amount donated was $1600.00 (see List of Donors), and the total cost of purchased medicines was $2800. The cost of shipping 6 boxes was $300. The free ride of 1500 Kakailians from barangays to the Civic Center in town will also be charged to the missions, about $250.00. So we have a long way to cover all costs. The final accounting of the mission will be published after event.
Lesson learned from London, "YOU WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT THE ANSWER IS UNTIL YOU ASK". SO, KEEP ASKING! Thank you again, Josie. You have just become a lifetime member of "Annak ti Naguilian", (see Members).

Southern California Naguilianders Meetings with Mayor Abe Rimando-
Submitted by Elsa Buck, Torrance, CA
10/28/08
The LA meeting was held in Reseda, CA residence of Nanang Juliana Batarina(?) Rimando. This Lady Naguiliander and sister used to attend the late Fred Vita's meetings in Gardena, CA. They own the Rimando Resort in Lioac, Nagulian. Seven of her 9 boys and their families were present at the meeting. It was a big crowd. Among other Naguilianders were Uncle Gracie Cacdac and spouse-auntie Fe, Mng Gloria Bambao (sister of Angeles Bambao) and Mng German Estepa. Others were the Fontanos/Pabros family, Mng Victor Florendo and spouse.
There were a lot of questions about the situation in Naguilian, but nothing Mayor Abe could not answer. When all the political jitttery has calmed down, the Mayor talked about the Global Reunion on Feb 2009. The proposed schedule and activites. After the Q&A, people who were thinking of going home, at this time solidified their conviction to go home. Four attendees, including Uncle Gracie & auntie Fe, gave their $50.00 for the Global Reunion Dinner/Dance. An estimate of 10 people are ready to go from that meeting alone, and possible more. This LA group has expressed that they will make their own travel arrangements.
The San Diego Group was more upbeat about the reunion. It was held at the residence of Henry Dumo. There were at least 20 people positively going home for the global reunion from this group. The fact was-they were calling HAN's Travel about the tours. It was not certain whether all were joining the tours, but definitely going to Naguilian. The SD group seemed to be a solid group with lots of activities planned. After Mayor Abe answered all questions, they all seemed comfortable in committing to participate. Ellen (?) was there and among the definite yes. Thank you to Henry Dumo for offering his house for this meeting. Henry Dumo was such a nice gentleman with a wonderful spouse and family.
From the assessment of Mayor Abe, here are some rough totals: Seattle about 10, Bay Area 20, LA 10, SD 20,
Total of 60. There is a good possibility that the number could reach 75-80. Even just 60 Balikbayans will make a big impact on the global reunion. 100 will definitely make a HUGE IMPACT! Let's GO!

Northern California Naguilianders meetings with Mayor Abe Rimando-
10/21/08
Members of "Annak" met with Mayor Abe at Chilis Restaurant today. After a brief talk about what happened politically in Naguilian, we talked in some detail the PLAN for our Global Reunion. As it stand, the 4th Naguilian Global Reunion is a "GO".
AS we invisioned it originally and as it was reflected on our THEME, it starts with a Spiritual Recollection on February 6th, 7th, & 8th, 2009 to be held at the Marian Center in Angin. Our Mayor handed 40 applications to the Catholic Outreach Group in Vallejo, CA. The 40 registrants will come from all over the region in La Union but emphasis were folks from Naguilian.
The Medical/Dental Mission will be held in Naguilian on February 17th, 18th, and 19th, 2009. With the coordinator of the Medical/Dental Mission, Dr.Mila Viernes, we finalized what we have to do and how much we will need to care for 1500 outpatients for those three days.
Class Reunions will happen on February 20th and 21st, 2009. The Golden Jubilarians Class '59, under the leadership of German Estepa, were first to submit their plan for their class reunion. We need everybody's plans so we can publish it in this website.
On February 22nd, 2009, Sunday, Mass to be given by The Most Rev. Bishop Artemio Rillera, time to be announced pending confirmation. At nighttime, we will have our Global Reunion. Details of this event will follow. The plan is to submit a plan (coming from us) to the Mayor and in turn the municipality will respond on how they can serve and perhaps improve the plan. The location will be determined by the Mayor depending on the number of attendees from here (US). As we agreed, there will be no political speeches, just acknowledgements. There will be dinner and dance, and more dance. Since the Balikbayans will be shouldering most of the expenses, we agreed that each attendee from the US will pay $50.00 for the Dinner/Dance. Included in this amount is the bus from Shangrila to Naguilian, if there will be one. With this amount, we can invite some members of the Barangays and some folks from Naguilian.
February 23rd, 2009, Monday, The Day-After-The-Reunion, will be an Evaluation Day. This day we will have a joint meeting between leaders of Naguilian Municipality and the Balikbayans on how we can further improve Naguilian, and how we can merge our plans to have a concerted effort towards PEACE, WELLNESS and PROGRESS, through education, spiritual and economic empowerment. Our goal is to form a Strategic Plan on how we can achieve such an endeavour. All Balikbayans, especially the leaders, are invited to this major meeting.
This day is also the GIVEAWAY DAY. Among other things, we will give away about 200 Nike jerseys to promote Physical Education among teens. Donations coming from "Annak Ti Naguilian". If you are joining us to this Global Event, please bring toothbrushes and toothpastes instead of candies as giveaways, as suggested by our beloved Dentist. We are trying to align our actions with our Wellness Theme.
10/18-10/19, 2008
Thank you for the gracious reception of Fely Esplana and Erna Bambao and the Sacramento Group, the meeting in Elk Grove, CA with Mayor Abe was a success. And the delicious food prepared at Pete and Velma Ferrer's house and other participants, in Rio Vista, CA.
The Bottom Line: As a result of the Mayor's visit, more Naguilianders are planning to attend the 4th Naguilian Global Reunion in Naguilian (than before his visit).
Some of the questions raised during the meeting were: How did the political problem came about? What is the current state of affairs in Naguilian? Is it safe to go home? How did the Shabu Problem affected Naguilian? What is the current economic situation in Naguilian? What is the future of Naguilian?
Mayor Abe explained in detail the events before and after the election. The Philippine Shabu investigation and the presence of US Drug Enforcement Agency made Naguilian a safer place. Political problems have died down and are now suppressed. Finally, he made his reassurance that Naguilian is very safe. Thank you, Mayor Abe.

Expansion To Include Elementary School Years-
High School Class Year expanded to include Elementary Graduation. For instance, if you graduated High School in 1963, and/or graduated Elementary in 1959, you belong to the same group. To further expand the group, if you graduated elementary in '59 and High School in '63 anywhere in this world, and have roots from Naguilian, you belong to the '59, '63 group. You, in a sense, belong to "ANNAK TI NAGUILIAN". See article "The Birth of a Club" written by Helen Floresca on the Home page and scroll down.
Appeal for Medicines-
Funds needed for a 3-day Medical/Dental Mission during our Global Reunion in February 2009. A direct request from Mayor Abe was given to Dr. Mila Viernes to perform a 3-day Medical/Dental Mission when we go home to Naguilian. The Medical Health Officer in Naguilian, Dr. Dumaguing, has given Dr. Viernes a list of medicines needed to perform outpatient services for about 1500 patients in 3 days. We are in need of donations to buy medicines, at cost, at Seton Medical Pharmacy in Daly City. Contact Dr.Mila Viernes at milaviernesrn@mail.com. or through "Contact Us".

Naguilian Alliance Network (NAN) has given blessings for "Annak Ti Naguilian" to take the helm on the 2009 Global Reunion of Naguilianons in Naguilian, La Union, Philippines, to be held on February 22, 2009. It was an unfortunate political event that NAN management was left no choice but to disengage itself from the original co-sponsorship of the 2009 Global Reunion as agreed upon, with Mayor Abe and the Office of Congressman Butch Dumpit, during the 2007 Global Reunion in Las Vegas. Things must go on, that's why "Annak" has stepped forward to the helm.
At the 2009 reunion, the Class of '58 & '59 will have their 51st and 50th Anniversaries, since no celebration for the class '58 is going to be held in 2008, that we know off. Details will be posted under the subtitle-"Global Reunion 2009".
In preparation to the event, the most Reverend Bishop Artemio Rillera has invited a group of religious missionarians based in Vallejo, California to go to Naguilian to assist in a Recollection of Christianity for the Citizens of Naguilian. Details of this event are posted under "Recollection".

TRAINING IN MIAMI
After 3 years of semi-retired life, I am finally back to fulltime work at San Ramon Regional Medical Center, this time as a Lead in Hematology-Coagulation Section of the clinical laboratory. My first assignment was to learn a new Coulter instrument that the hospital purchased. So I went to Miami for a week long training, and needless to say, I learned a lot of stuff...Did it look like I went there to learn anything? See for yourself.
